  5. There can be few I.T. people who are not aware of the impact of the year
  6. 2000 on computer systems worldwide.

  8. There are probably some, however, who feel that there's "plenty of time" left
  9. yet before things get desparate!

  11. Y2K is a DOS program written to show just how little time there is left by
  12. showing todays date and time, and a countdown of days, hours, minutes and
  13. seconds before the new millennium.

  16.              Suggested Installation and Operation

  18. Place Y2K.EXE somewhere on the DOS PATH, then type Y2K at the DOS prompt.
  19. Alternatively, you can install it as a DOS program under MS Windows 3.0 and
  20. upwards. Check your MS Windows documentation on how to do this.

  25. Y2K is Freeware. You may freely use and distribute the Y2K program so long as:

  27. i)  You distribute the complete original archive Y2KV101.ZIP
  28. ii) You do not charge money for the Y2K program or it's documentation
  29. ii) You do not claim the Y2K program or it's documentation as your own work.

  32.                   PGP Authentication

  34. For those of you familiar with the Pretty-Good-Privacy system, I have provided
  35. a detached certificate in Y2K.ASC which can be used to authenticate Y2K.EXE.
  36. You will need my PGP public key in order to do this. My key is available from
  37. any public keyserver (KeyID 5AEDC595), or by sending a blank message to my
  38. responder at <pgp-key@magnorth.nildram.co.uk>. Note that the text file you are
  39. now reading also contains a PGP signature.

  41. If Y2K.EXE does not pass the signature check, then I suggest you do not use
  42. it, as this will mean that the original executable has been altered in some
  43. way.

  48. When the 1st January 2000 does arrive, there may be many older PC's that 
  49. malfunction.

  51. If, out of curiosity, you decide that you want to alter your PC's clock to see
  52. what happens at the turn of the millennium, you may experience those problems
  53. immediately.  What will happen?  Who can say. But you should not experiment
  54. with your PC's clock without a full and current backup of your system. Note
  55. that the Y2K program does NOT alter the PC's clock in any way.

  58. kind.  There is no guarantee that the program or it's documentation is fit for
