The New Millennium is Coming!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There can be few I.T. people who are not aware of the impact of the year
2000 on computer systems worldwide.
There are probably some, however, who feel that there's "plenty of time" left
yet before things get desparate!
Y2K is a DOS program written to show just how little time there is left by
showing todays date and time, and a countdown of days, hours, minutes and
seconds before the new millennium.
Suggested Installation and Operation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Place Y2K.EXE somewhere on the DOS PATH, then type Y2K at the DOS prompt.
Alternatively, you can install it as a DOS program under MS Windows 3.0 and
upwards. Check your MS Windows documentation on how to do this.
Distribution of the Y2K Program and Documentation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y2K is Freeware. You may freely use and distribute the Y2K program so long as:
i) You distribute the complete original archive Y2KV101.ZIP
ii) You do not charge money for the Y2K program or it's documentation
ii) You do not claim the Y2K program or it's documentation as your own work.
PGP Authentication
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For those of you familiar with the Pretty-Good-Privacy system, I have provided
a detached certificate in Y2K.ASC which can be used to authenticate Y2K.EXE.
You will need my PGP public key in order to do this. My key is available from
any public keyserver (KeyID 5AEDC595), or by sending a blank message to my
responder at <pgp-key@magnorth.nildram.co.uk>. Note that the text file you are
now reading also contains a PGP signature.
If Y2K.EXE does not pass the signature check, then I suggest you do not use
it, as this will mean that the original executable has been altered in some
way.
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the 1st January 2000 does arrive, there may be many older PC's that
malfunction.
If, out of curiosity, you decide that you want to alter your PC's clock to see
what happens at the turn of the millennium, you may experience those problems
immediately. What will happen? Who can say. But you should not experiment
with your PC's clock without a full and current backup of your system. Note
that the Y2K program does NOT alter the PC's clock in any way.
The Y2K program and documentation are provided "as is" without warranty of any
kind. There is no guarantee that the program or it's documentation is fit for
any purpose whatsoever. The author accepts no liability or responsibility for
any damage caused directly or indirectly by using the Y2K program or it's
documentation.
And Finally...
Let me know if you find Y2K of any use. I know it's a trivial enough program,
but if anyone has any reasonable suggestions for improvement, I may well
release another version.
Happy new millennium!,
Simon Chapman
